It is not an ambush.  The interventionist compassionately and safely provides a structured opportunity for the addict or alcoholic to clearly see the devastation their illness has caused those around them—as well as the seriousness of their situation.

Very few addicts and alcoholics recover on their own. Any individual whose life is being torn apart by drugs, alcohol abuse or another addiction needs an intervention.  Many will simply not seek out help without assistance.
